Quinte Ballet School of Canada

The Dance Program is organized as a partnership between Centennial Secondary School and the Quinte Ballet School of Canada. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to dance during school hours to receive up to 2 credits a year. This professional dance program focuses on developing technique, creativity, and artistry. The curriculum is based on ballet training and all technique classes are accompanied by a professional musician. The theory includes the study of anatomy, injury prevention, nutrition, the history of dance, and portfolio building. Entrance into this program must be arranged through an audition process conducted by the Quinte Ballet School of Canada.

No Limits

The Dance Program is organized as a partnership between Centennial Secondary and No Limits Dance. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to dance during school hours to receive up to 2 credits a year. This professional dance program focuses on developing technique, creativity, and artistry. The curriculum is based on ballet training, acro, hip-hop, jazz, and lyrical. The theory includes the study of anatomy, injury prevention, nutrition, the history of dance, and portfolio building. Entrance into this program must be arranged through an audition process conducted by No Limits Dance.

ATB1O – GRADE 9 ARTS – DANCE

This course emphasizes the basic movements of one or more world dance forms, and the scientific and safety principles related to dance. Students will create movement vocabulary for dance compositions, express themselves through movement and investigate the historical and cultural development of dance. They will also learn about creative influences on dancers and choreographers and the role of criticism in the art of dance.

ATB2O – GRADE 10 ARTS – DANCE

This course requires students to develop their dance skills and learn the theoretical basis for working with anatomical structure in executing dance movements. Student learning will include the processes that form the basis for creating dance; the historical development of dance; the aesthetic appreciation of dance through participation in dance class, rehearsals, and performance; and the specialized vocabulary of dance criticism.

ATB3M – GRADE 11 ARTS – DANCE – UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE

This course emphasizes the development of technical, composition, and presentation skills in one or more world dance forms. Students will acquire and refine dance skills; compose and present increasingly complex dance works; interpret and evaluate a variety of dance presentations; and study the historical development of various dance forms and the functions of dance in specific cultures.

Prerequisite: ATB1O1 or ATB2O1

ATB4M – GRADE 12 ARTS – DANCE, UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE

This course emphasizes the development of technical proficiency and the creation and presentation of complex compositions. Students will acquire increasingly difficult technical skills; assume leadership as dancers, choreographers, and production personnel; analyze and evaluate dance performances; and study historical and cultural aspects of dance, especially of dance in Canada.

Prerequisite: ATB3M1

ATC1O – GRADE 9 – DANCE

This course gives students the opportunity to explore their technical and compositional skills by applying the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations. Students will generate movement through structured and unstructured improvisation, demonstrate an understanding of safe practices with regard to themselves and others in the dance environment, and identify the function and significance of dance within the global community.

ATC2O – GRADE 10 – DANCE – OPEN

This course emphasizes the development of students’ technique and creative skills relating to the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations. Students will identify responsible personal and interpersonal practices related to dance processes and production, and will apply technologies and techniques throughout the process of creation to develop artistic scope in the dance arts.

ATC3M – GRADE 11 – DANCE – UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE

This course emphasizes the development of students’ artistry, improvisational and compositional skills, and technical proficiency in dance genres from around the world. Students will apply dance elements, techniques, and tools in a variety of ways, including performance situations; describe and model responsible practices related to the dance environment; and reflect on how the study of dance affects personal and artistic development.

Prerequisite: PPL1O1A or ATC2O

ATC4M – GRADE 12 – DANCE – UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE

This course emphasizes the development of students’ technical proficiency, fluency in the language of movement in dance genres from around the world, and understanding of dance science. Students will explain the social, cultural, and historical contexts of dance; apply the creative process through the art of dance in a variety of ways; and exhibit an understanding of the purpose and possibilities of continuing engagement in the arts as a lifelong learner.
